  1. What's New in BBEdit Lite 3.5
  2. ------ --- -- ------ ---- ---

  4. This document provides a quick overview of what's new in BBEdit Lite
  5. 3.5, relative to version 3.0. In general, many improvements and
  6. refinements have been made to the user interface, and a number of
  7. performance enhancements and bug fixes are also included.

  9. PowerPC Performance
  10. ------- -----------
  11.  
  12. BBEdit Lite now contains some PowerPC code, to improve performance
  13. when opening and editing large files.
  14.  
  15. "Soft" Text Wrapping
  16. ------ ---- --------
  17.  
  18. BBEdit Lite 3.5 features "soft" text wrapping, in which long lines of
  19. text are automatically wrapped to the width of the editing window,
  20. without using carriage returns. As you insert and delete text, BBEdit
  21. Lite will automatically re-flow the text as necessary. The "Soft
  22. Wrap Text" option replaces the old "Wrap While Typing" option.

  24. New "Find" Dialog
  25. --- ------ ------

  27. The Find dialog (which comes up when you choose "Find..." from the
  28. Search menu) has been expanded and revised for more functionality
  29. and greater ease of use. All of the options from BBEdit Lite 3.0
  30. are present, but you no longer have to flip pages in the dialog
  31. in order to access the multi-file search options. In addition,
  32. you can now hide the multi-file search options by clicking the
  33. small triangle to the left of the "Multi-File Search" check box.

  35. A "Start at Top" option has been added. When this option is selected,
  36. BBEdit Lite will always search forward from the beginning of the file,
  37. regardless of where the current selection range may be.

  39. Updated Menus

  42. BBEdit Lite now uses Ramon Felciano's "Mercutio" menu definition.
  43. In addition to being more compatible than the previous approach,
  44. Mercutio also makes "alternative" keyboard equivalents visible
  45. while menus are pulled down. (To see this in action, pull down
  46. the File menu, and slowly press and release the Option key.)

  48. Improved "Get Info" dialog

  51. The Get Info dialog has been expanded to provide character, word, and
  52. line counts for both the selection range and the entire documents. To
  53. compute the page count for the selection range and entire document,
  54. click the "Paginate" button. The "Copy Path" button will place the full
  55. path of the front document onto the Clipboard, ready for pasting into
  56. an edit window or into another application.

  58. Simplified Preferences

  61. The "Zap Gremlins" and "Hard Wrap" commands now remember their settings
  62. after you quit BBEdit. As a result, the "Wrapping" and "Zapping"
  63. sections of the Preferences dialog are no longer required, and have
  64. been removed.

  66. In addition, the "Preferences" dialog has been revised for greater
  67. ease of use. All available preferences are listed on the left-hand
  68. side of the Preferences dialog; you can click on any one of the
  69. items to make that page of the dialog available.

  71. Simplified State

  74. The "Remember File State" option controls whether or not BBEdit Lite
  75. remembers a document's state information (window position and size, font
  76. settings, display and printing options, and more). Version 3.5 no longer
  77. differentiates between the different state resource formats, but instead
  78. saves the state information in a format that is compatible with all
  79. modern text editors and development environments. (The Remember File
  80. State option for each document can be found on the file options popup in
  81. each window's status area, and can be set for all new documents in the
  82. "State" section of the Preferences dialog.)

  84. Bug Fixes

  87. As of BBEdit Lite 3.5.1, the following reported problems have been fixed:

  89. -    Page numbers are now printed correctly, i.e. "Page M of N", instead
  90.     of "MN".
  91.  
  92. -    Some character spacing anomalies when printing in Monaco on laser
  93.     printers have been worked around. Monaco remains a problematic font,
  94.     however - we recommend the use of Courier or ProFont.
  95.  
  96. -    A bug which prevented the opening of 'PICT' files has been
  97.     corrected.
  98.  
  99. -    When bringing up the "Find..." dialog for the first time in a
  100.     session, the popup area next to the "File Type" prompt would be
  101.     blank. It now correctly displays "All Available".
  102.     
  103. -    The diamonds in the Windows menu are now properly updated each
  104.     time you pull down the Windows menu.
  105.  
  106. -    The items on the Edit menu are now correctly enabled when a
  107.     dialog box is being displayed.
  108.  
  109. -    The items in the Windows menu are now properly updated after
  110.     performing a "Save As" operation.

  112. As of BBEdit Lite 3.5, the following reported problems have been fixed:

  114. -    Multi-file replace operations no longer skip every other file.
  115.  
  116. -    The "Indent All Lines" option for "Hard Wrap" now works correctly
  117.     when wrapping multiple paragraphs.
  118.  
  119. -    "Zap Gremlins" now properly zaps the forward-delete (ASCII 127)
  120.     character when "Zap Control Characters" is activated in the
  121.     dialog.
